Nano-engineered high-efficiency solar cells


  The talk will discuss various nature inspired nano-engineering-based approaches for improving the efficiencies of solar cells, including the use of subwavelength structures for reflection loss minimization and lateral composition modulation for bandgap optimisation. Various methods and technologies for experimental implementation and commercial developments will be discussed with several examples and promising results.

Short Biography:

  Professor Yong Tak Lee is the Director of the Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), South Korea. He has been with the School of Information and Communications at GIST, heading the optoelectronics Group, since 1994. He is also Adjunct Professor with Edith Cowan University, Australia, and Southeast University, China.
  Professor Yong Tak Lee is Korea-first leader in the epitaxial growth of compound semiconductors for optoelectronics. He has pioneered the Korean R&D activities on the development of world-first optoelectronic devices, structures and systems, which yielded several inventions on integrated semiconductor optoelectronic devices including laser diodes, photodetectors, solar cells, imaging sensor, Opto-VLSI, semiconductor optical amplifiers, LEDs, , nanophotonic devices, as well as chip-to-chip optical interconnects and micro beam projection systems. In 2009 Prof Lee won the Korean Government Award for outstanding researcher. In 2010 and 2012, he won GIST Award for best publication, and in 2013 he won GIST Research Award. Since 1994 he has been the top-performer in publishing high-impact papers at GIST-Korea, contributing to making GIST 4th in the world and Number one in Asia for high-impact publication citation in 2014. Professor Lee is the author/co-author of over 60 patents (National and International phases), over 200 journal papers and over 300 conference proceedings.
